As the South Carolina Gamecocks gear up for another baseball season, the program will take a moment to honor one of its most iconic figures. The University of South Carolina has announced that Founders Park’s playing field will officially be renamed Ray Tanner Field during a special dedication ceremony on Saturday, February 15, 2025.

The dedication comes just days before the Gamecocks begin their much-anticipated 2025 season. Opening Day is set for Friday, February 14, with South Carolina hosting Sacred Heart in a weekend series at Founders Park. The tribute to Tanner will take place on the field prior to the second game of the series, scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday. To commemorate the event, the first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a special Ray Tanner trading card, celebrating his extraordinary impact on Gamecock baseball.

A Legacy Worth Celebrating

Ray Tanner is more than just a name in South Carolina’s baseball history—he’s a legend. During his tenure as head coach from 1997 to 2012, Tanner turned the Gamecocks into a national powerhouse, leading the team to back-to-back NCAA National Championships in 2010 and 2011. Under his guidance, South Carolina also made six College World Series appearances and captured numerous SEC titles. His influence extended beyond victories, creating a culture of excellence and tradition that remains the foundation of the program today.

Following his coaching career, Tanner transitioned into his role as South Carolina’s athletic director, where he has overseen the continued growth of Gamecock athletics. From facility improvements to spearheading support for student-athletes, Tanner’s vision has left an indelible mark on the university as a whole.

Founders Park: The House That Tanner Built

Renaming the field in Tanner’s honor is particularly fitting, as Founders Park is a symbol of the program’s rise under his leadership. Opened in 2009, the stadium set a new standard for collegiate baseball facilities, offering fans a top-tier experience while creating a home-field advantage for one of the country’s most dedicated fan bases.

A Weekend of Celebration

The opening weekend of the 2025 season is shaping up to be a special one. With just 32 days until first pitch, excitement is building among the Gamecock faithful. Fans will not only get to see the team begin its journey to what they hope will be another memorable season but also have the chance to pay tribute to the man who laid the groundwork for the program’s success.

The dedication ceremony is expected to draw a large crowd, with many former players, coaches, and fans in attendance to honor Tanner’s legacy. As the Gamecocks take the field on Ray Tanner Field for the first time, it will serve as a powerful reminder of the program’s proud history and its ongoing quest for greatness.

Mark your calendars for February 14-16 and be part of the celebration at Founders Park. This weekend is about more than baseball—it’s a tribute to a true Gamecock legend.
