Where Williams-Brice Stadium and South Carolina football rank among SEC game venues
By Kevin Miller
July is a tough month for content on the college football calendar. Barring major recruiting news (South Carolina football has an unannounced silent commitment, by the way) or something unexpected in the coaching world, most of this point in the offseason is filled with speculation about the upcoming season, rankings and lists, or a combination of both.
Recently, CBS Sports' David Cobb ranked all 16 gameday venues in the SEC, and Williams-Brice Stadium placed in the top half of the league's stadiums.
Cobb's rankings put the Gamecocks and Willy B ahead of Texas A&M's Kyle Field, the venue that (egregiously) brought home "toughest place to play" honors from the folks over at EA Sports ahead of the release of College Football 25 later this month.
Despite not being at the peak of their powers like they were when Connor Shaw finished with an undefeated record at home, the current South Carolina football program is 9-3 in their last 12 games at home. That is a decent mark against a tough schedule, and the Gamecocks won their only top-10 matchup at Williams-Brice (a 63-38 shellacking of the #6 Tennessee Volunteers in 2022) during that stretch of games.
The entire ranking is listed below:
- LSU Tigers: Tiger Stadium/Death Valley
- Alabama Crimson Tide: Bryant-Denny Stadium
- Florida Gators: Ben Hill Griffin Stadium/Steve Spurrier Field/The Swamp
- Tennessee Volunteers: Neyland Stadium
- Auburn Tigers: Jordan-Hare Stadium
- Georgia Bulldogs: Sanford Stadium
- South Carolina Gamecocks: Williams-Brice Stadium
- Texas A&M Aggies: Kyle Field
- Oklahoma Sooners: Gaylord-Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium
- Texas Longhorns: Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium
- Mississippi State Bulldogs: Davis Wade Stadium
- Arkansas Razorbacks: Donald W Reynolds Razorbacks Stadium
- Ole Miss Rebels: Vaught-Hemingway Stadium
- Missouri Tigers: MemorialStadium/Faurot Field
- Kentucky Wildcats: Kroger Field/Commonwealth Stadium
- Vanderbilt Commodores: FirstBank Stadium
The Gamecocks' first home game of the 2024 season will be in the season opener. The old Dominion Monarchs will come to Columbia for a 4:15 kickoff. The game will be aired on the SEC Network and streamed on the ESPN app.
