"We're trying to screw this up" says frustrated South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer
By Kevin Miller
Shane Beamer's South Carolina football team came out of the gate hot on Saturday as they pushed an early lead over the LSU Tigers all the way to 17-0 following a huge blocked punt.
Unfortunately for Carolina fans, the suffocating defense from the 1st quarter did not translate to the 2nd, and LSU began to move the ball at will. Self-inflicted wounds on offense (penalties, sacks, etc.) kept the Gamecocks to just 7 more points, all of which came thanks to a 75-yard run from quarterback LaNorris Sellers.
LSU cut the lead to 24-16 after a lightning-quick drive that culminated with a blown assignment from safety DQ Smith giving the Tigers an easy touchdown.
USC had another chance for points to close the half, but LaNorris Sellers took a sack to push the Gamecocks out of field goal range. The redshirt freshman signal-caller also got injured on the play as his ankle got rolled up under multiple players on the hit. Backup Robby Ashford took a sack before he could even get off a Hail Mary attempt in the closing seconds of the half, and Coach Beamer was not happy with the way his team played in the 2nd quarter.
Speaking with ESPN's Holly Rowe as he was on his was to the locker room, Beamer frustratingly exclaimed that his team was "trying to screw this thing up." When pushed by Rowe for details, the exasperated head coach spat out a few responses: "self-inflicted wounds...penalties...taking sacks...holding onto the football" all came spewing out as it became clear a tough conversation was incoming for the Gamecocks during the halftime intermission.
Even with the bad quarter, the South Carolina football fans in attendance still remained hopeful for a College GameDay upset of the Bayou Bengals as the Gamecocks took a 24-16 lead into the half.
