The month of June has become a month in which recruiting news comes in for the South Carolina football program on a daily basis.
Since the start of the month, the Gamecocks' recruiting class has grown from 6 players to 17 as Jaquel Holman (3-star athlete), Kobby Sakyi-Prah (3-star EDGE), Chris Hatfield (3-star DB), Preston Douglas (3-star TE), AJ Holloway (3-star LB) Shed Sarratt (4-star OL), Max Kelley (5-star K/P), Jaquavious Dodd (4-star EDGE), Kyler Farrow (5-star LS), Cutter Woods (3-star QB), and the most recent pledge Taeshawn Alston (3-star EDGE/LB) all announced that they were joining the class.
With several South Carolina football targets revealing their plans to make public college decisions before the end of the summer, the '25 cycle will continue to be busy behind the scenes for USC as the 2024 version of the team gets ready for fall practice to start.
Overton had been strongly considering South Carolina earlier in his recruitment, but the Gamecocks will have to shift their focus elsewhere if they want to sign a running back in the class. In-state athlete Jaquel Holman (who committed to the program earlier in June) is likely to play linebacker or safety at the college level, but he has a background as a high school running back.
Even if Carolina does not take a 'back in this high school class, the scholarship numbers should work out fine at the position. Rocket Sanders and Juju McDowell will be gone after the season due to graduation, but scholarship running backs Djay Braswell, Jawarn Howell, and Matthew Fuller all will have at least two more years left to play after the season (and, it seems likely at least one will redshirt). With that young talent still hanging around and Oscar Adaway having one more year of eligibility, there is not a desperate need for young talent at running back in this class.
