In most recruiting cycles, major college programs like to take a quarterback. South Carolina football offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains and his offensive staff had been involved with several names in the class of 2025, but none of them seemed to work out well enough.
On Monday, around dinnertime, that changed. Loggains got his man when Westside High School quarterback Cutter Woods flipped his commitment from the Wake Forest Demon Deacons to the South Carolina Gamecocks.
Woods' commitment to the South Carolina football program makes him the 16th public pledge (including special teamers) in the '25 cycle. He had been committed to Wake Forest since April, but the Gamecocks' pursuit in recent months proved too much as he has elected to stay in his home state and play for the Gamecocks.
As a player, Woods is an intriguing prospect. He is a consensus 3-star prospect, but he has a ceiling that is higher than that. Tough-minded and stronger than his 200-pound frame might indicate, Woods reminds some in the USC fanbase of South Carolina football legend Connor Shaw (though, Woods has more hair than Shaw ever did).
Placing Shaw-like expectations on the Anderson native isn't fair, but he does resemble Shaw in his dual-threat ability. He is more of a pocket passer than Shaw, but he has enough movement ability that there is something to be unlocked with his legs if he is in the right offense.
Woods has improved as a passer over the last year, and his athletic potential makes him a good fit for the system most expect the Gamecocks to run with LaNorris Sellers under center.
MaxPreps named Woods the South Carolina football player of the year last season as he led his Westside team to a state title.
