South Carolina football fans have seen their favorite team be one of the country's most active transfer portal teams over the past month and a half.

Over 20 players have left the program as transfers (many of them already finding a new home), and the Gamecocks are approaching 20 commitments from the transfer portal, as well.

On Monday, Gamecock head coach Shane Beamer revealed that he had gotten a phone call with yet another commitment to the South Carolina football program.

Beamer and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains were in Ohio recruiting major 2025 quarterback target Ryan Montgomery (who is supposed to be on campus soon) when they got the news.

The post from Beamer mirrors the format of most of the transfer portal commitment announcements that have surfaced from the Gamecock headman since the Early Signing Period ended. Because the post does not include a recruiting class hashtag (#24evertothee or #2and5torm), this pledge likely is another player from the portal.

Some fans have speculated that Beamer's inclusion of Loggains in the message could be a hint as to the identity of the player. Since Loggains is the quarterbacks coach, the name Robby Ashford has surfaced as he was on campus recently.

Ashford, a former part-time starter at Auburn, has two more years of eligibility remaining. He has over 2500 yards of total offense (passing and rushing) in his career and has scored 21 touchdowns (12 passing, 9 rushing).

Ashford is known for his running ability, meaning that he could carve out a role with the Gamecocks even if he doesn't beat out LaNorris Sellers for the starting job.

The Gamecocks have already added sixth-year senior Davis Beville (Oklahoma) through the portal this offseason as a preferred walk-on. Beville's addition brought the Gamecock quarterback position to three players as projected starter LaNorris Sellers, incoming 4-star freshman Dante Reno, and Beville were the only players left in the room. If USC adds Ashford to the mix (or another experienced player), they probably will be satisfied with their status at the position for the 2024 season.

There is also the chance that Beamer could be announcing Gilber Edmond's re-commitment to the South Carolina football program. The EDGE player spent a year at Florida State after leaving the Gamecocks after the 2022 season.
