South Carolina Football: Gamecocks pick up another 2 commitments
By Kevin Miller
The crazy South Carolina football news cycle continues.
In the last few days, the Gamecocks have lost two more players to the transfer portal, including 2023 4-star Grayson "Pup" Howard and had an assistant coach fired (running backs coach Montario Hardesty). They have also picked up a commitment from FCS All-American offensive lineman Torricelli Simpkins and lost a transfer portal signee when tight end Brady Hunt decommitted from the program. Some former Gamecocks (Gilber Edmond and Dominick Hill) have also re-entered the transfer portal).
The latest update, though, should be a positive one.
On Thursday afternoon, South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer announced the team's second #WelcomeHome commitment in the last two days.
Beamer's message did not include any of his usual clues to the commit's idenity. This mirrors how he handled Wendesday's commitment message, as well, and that player ended up being transfer portal addition Torricelli Simpkins, so perhaps, this commitment is also from the portal.
As is typical with any commitment these days, an announcement from the player has not yet come, so fans will be waiting to learn the identity of the latest Gamecock pledge.
A second #WelcomeHome dropped less than 30 minutes later, this one with the South Carolina state flag, indicating the commitment is from the Palmetto State.
On Thursday, South Carolina native and former Louisville Cardinals wide receiver Ahmari Huggins-Bruce was on campus visiting the program. So was former Houston Cougars offensive lineman Reuben Unije. Several other players have been expected to be on campus this week, as well.
Beamer's messages seem to indicate that the Gamecock headman expects there to be more USC-friendly news coming soon.
Linebackers Bangally Kamara (Pittsburgh), Demetrius Knight (Charlotte), and Mani Powell (Arkansas) are three transfer portal targets the Gamecocks need just a little bit more after the Stone Blanton and Pup Howard defections.
South Carolina football needs a quarterback to join LaNorris Sellers and Dante Reno, and even if Ahmari Huggins-Bruce is one of the Thursday commitments, the Gamecocks could use another wide receiver. Cornerback is still a position of need, and with Hunt's decision to flip, perhaps USC could be in the market for a replacement tight end, as well.
