South Carolina football picked up two walk-on commitments on Saturday. The first was from Charlotte running back Neil Salvage III, and the second came from Charleston long snapper Gunnar Yocum.

Salvage was a highly productive back for Charlotte Latin School, and he turned down some smaller scholarship offers to walk on with the Gamecocks. He will join fellow freshman Matthew Fuller (4-star; Wayne County High School; Jesup, Georgia) and transfers Rocket Sanders (Arkansas), Oscar Adaway (North Texas), and Jawarn Howell (South Carolina State) as first-year running backs on the South Carolina football team.

Running back reserves (the role Salvage will play early in his career in Columbia) often play special teams as players who have enough speed to cover kicks. If things go well for him, he could carve out a special teams role under new special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis. He could also provide another body at wide receiver or defensive back as he played those spots in high school, as well.

Yocum is a special story out of Philip Simmons High School. The incoming walk-on long snapper is a survivor of a rare form of cancer that caused him to miss an entire year of school and football. However, after a couple of appeals, he was granted an extra year of eligibility to play football as he finished school. Now, he gets the chance to play college football with the South Carolina football program.

Yocum also played some defensive end and linebacker in high school. His experience as a defensive player should help him as he covers punts, something that current long snapper Hunter Rogers has done very well during his time in garnet and black. Yocum will compete for the long snapping job after Rogers graduates next year.
