South Carolina Football's Spring Transfer Portal Needs:
Young Talent at Defensive Tackle

South Carolina currently has just one player at the defensive tackle position who has more than two years or eligibility remaining. Most of this stems from the fact that defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey left the program last spring (he has since been fired by LSU) and hadn't done a great recruiting job before leaving.

The Gamecocks have multiple starting-level players at the positions for this year, and depending how the portal and/or NFL Draft affect the tackle room, they could be set for starters next season, as well.

However, the lack of young players at defensive tackle is a problem that needs to be fixed. Much of this will be handled through high school recruiting, but the Gamecocks might want to consider bringing in a young player or two this spring, especially if that player has a redshirt available, as the defensive tackle room will be close to empty after 2024.

Tonka Hemingway, Boogie Huntley, Nick Barrett, Deandre Jules, Drew Tuazama, and swing player Elijah Davis are all out of eligibility for defensive line coach Travian Robertson after this fall. TJ Sanders has another year but likely will be off to the NFL if he has a good year. Monkell Goodwine (2 years left), Jerome Simmons (2 years left), and Jamaal Whyce (3 years left) can return next season.

If USC can add a young player at the position this spring and then pick up a veteran or two after the season (like they did with Jules this year), they will be close to resetting the position for normal high school recruiting efforts.
