South Carolina Football: Gamecocks in line to land SEC starting quarterback?

South Carolina football redshirt freshman quarterback LaNorris Sellers will have some competition next fall as a former SEC starter is set to join the Gamecock program.

Per reports, South Carolina football is expected to land a commitment from former Vanderbilt quarterback AJ Swann.

South Carolina football fans have had a seemingly never-ending news cycle to follow regarding their favorite team's transfer portal activity.

So far, the Gamecocks have picked up 10 announced transfer commitments, and another Sunday #WelcomeHome message from head coach Shane Beamer indicates that another pledge is heading to Columbia, as well.

This week's 11th commitment may now be known. Or maybe not.

According to reports from 247Sports' Matt Zenitz and TheBigSpur's Hale McGranahan, AJ Swann is expected to be part of the South Carolina football program next year.

The Gamecocks are in big need of another scholarship quarterback on the roster. Heading into next season, redshirt freshman LaNorris Sellers is the expected starter at the position, and incoming freshman Dante Reno is the only other fulltime quarterback on the team (former quarterback Luke Doty is returning after spending the 2023 season splitting time between wide receiver and quarterback).

Swann, the starter at Vanderbilt before an injury this fall, would provide the 2024 version of the South Carolina football team with an experienced player who can provide legitimate competition for Sellers over the offseason and fill in as a dependable starter if something were to happen to Sellers.

It is not clear if Swann is the man behind Sunday's second #WelcomeHome (the first was former Tennessee Tech defensive back Gerald Kilgore, the brother of current Gamecock DB Jalon Kilgore; Ball State tight end transfer Brady Hunt also announced his pledge on Sunday after Beamer teased his commitment on Saturday).

A commitment from Swann likely takes South Carolina football out of the running for former Texas Longhorn quarterback Maalik Murphy. Murphy visited Columbia this weekend.

If there is another commitment still floating out there, it is likely one of the recent visitors to the program. Other than Murphy, offensive lineman Monroe Mills and defensive lineman LT Overton are the two highest-profile uncommitted names to have visited.
