South Carolina football quarterback Spencer Rattler spent two years in garnet and black (and that first year was halfway wasted by disgraced former offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield), but he is still viewed as one of the best signal-callers in the history of the Gamecock program.
#7 has had a highly-publicized career, and because of that, there are lots of opinions surrounding him.
Rattler had some immature moments at Oklahoma and, despite playing well, he was replaced by Caleb Williams with the Sooners before transferring. The maturation and leadership development in Columbia was apparent in Columbia to anyone that paid attention, and once Satterfield was no longer in the way, Rattler's big-time talent shown through on the field, as well.
His NFL Draft stock has been all over the place this offseason. Some have opined that he should be a late 1st round pick. Others believe he is a day three (rounds 4 through 7) guy. Many around the NFL, though, have high opinions of Spencer Rattler, including some former quarterbacks in the league.
Former Washington Redskins, Cleveland Browns, and Baltimore Ravens quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III (who now works for ESPN) called Rattler the "steal of the NFL Draft." On his podcast RG3 and the Ones, RG3 said he believes Rattler's arm talent, accuracy, experience with an NFL playbook, and growth since transferring to the South Carolina football program will make him a really good pro.
Long-time backup quarterback Chase Daniel (Washington Redskins, New Orleans Saints, Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, and Los Angeles Chargers) spoke about Rattler on Ross Tucker's Football Podcast. When asked about quarterback names to watch in the draft past the clear top-4 (Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, and JJ McCarthy), Daniel mentioned Rattler and said that his off-field growth "answered a lot of questions" for scouts. He also called him a "sleeper" in the draft in a video he posted to his Twitter/X account.
Former Atlanta Falcons, Green Bay Packers, and San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Kurt Benkert had some good things to say about Rattler, as well. On his Pocket Presence YouTube show, Benkert broke down Rattler's game and declared that he is "ready for the NFL." Benkert was most impressed by the way the former Gamecock combined poise and technique with creativity as a scrambler and as a passer.
The NFL Draft begins Thursday, April 25th and will last through Saturday, April 27th.
