South Carolina Football: Shane Beamer defends Spencer Rattler, blasts ESPN reporter's comments as "bullcrap"
By Kevin Miller
For reasons that don't make sense to many in the football world, South Carolina football quarterback Spencer Rattler has not yet joined former teammate Xavier Legette as a selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. Rounds 1, 2, and 3 have all come and gone, and #7 has been listed as the "best quarterback available" for quite some time, but he doesn't have an NFL home just yet.
During Friday night's coverage of the second and third rounds of the draft, Rattler's name kept being mentioned (again, because he is the "best quarterback available" after Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, Michael Penix, and Bo Nix were all taken in the 1st round). One of the times the former Gamecock came up, though, an ESPN personality made Carolina fans very angry.
ESPN reporter Pete Thamel suggested that Rattler might not have been taken in the opening three rounds of the draft because NFL franchises were concerned about his "work ethic" and "attitude."
Virtually everyone who has paid any attention to Rattler over the last five years knew that Thamel's take was stupid. However, Spencer Rattler's head coach wanted to make sure the message got across.
Beamer called into question Thamel's reporting, stating that he had zero NFL representatives question Rattler at all (and those are the types of questions that would be asked if there were real concerns).
Beamer reminded Thamel (and anyone else who needed to hear it) that Rattler was voted as a team captain by his teammates both years he was in garnet and black and that he was nothing but a "great person" and "great player" while representing the South Carolina football program.
Rattler will hear his name called on Saturday as the NFL Draft continues.
