South Carolina Football: Nyck Harbor wins SEC Freshman of the Week for track weekend
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina football wide receiver Nyck Harbor has had a really good freshman season with Gamecock track. He has done so well, in fact, that he has a realistic shot of being in contention for an Olympic spot this summer.
This past weekend, Harbor and the Gamecocks hosted the USC Outdoor Open, and the biggest man on the track set a couple of personal bests.
Harbor ran a blazing 10.12 in the 100-meter sprint, a number that was good for 3rd place and the 13th-best time in college track this year; it was also the 3rd-best time in program history. His 200-meter time was 20.38, and that mark was good enough for 2nd place (1st among college runners, only trailing world record-holder Matthew Boling) and also 13th in college track this outdoor season.
After his big-time weekend, Nyck Harbor was named the SEC Co-Freshman of the Week along with LSU Tigers freshman Jaiden Reid.
Harbor will have one more regular season opportunity to beat his personal-best marks as the Gamecock track season finishes its regular season next weekend at the Charlotte Invitational before the SEC Outdoor Championships, NCAA East Regional Outdoor Championships, and NCAA Outdoor National Championships.
Harbor will be with the South Carolina football team a little more frequently during the summer, but he still will not be a full-time football player as he will be working toward the Olympic Games. Harbor has already reached the minimum requirements to qualify for the Olympic Trials, but he has not yet reached "automatic qualifier" thresholds.
During the Garnet and Black Spring Game (Harbor did not play), the Gamecocks seemed to need more help at receiver. In his limited time with the team, Harbor's summer will go a long way in determining if he can provide the help that is needed for the USC passing game.
