South Carolina Football's Top National Signing Day Moments:
The Strange Saga of Jordan Burch
Back in 2020, even before the Covid-19 pandemic began in America, things got crazy around Gamecockland. On National Signing Day, 5-star defensive end Jordan Burch was announcing if he was staying home in Columbia or if he was headed off to play for another suitor like LSU, Clemson, or Georgia.
In a ceremony that day, Burch announced his commitment to the Gamecocks and signed his paperwork. There was little to no drama, and he even had a video made detailing why he was going to stay home and play for USC.
Then, no one heard anything. Hours went by, and the Gamecock coaching staff did not receive Burch's paperwork or hear from his family.
Rumors began to swirl that Burch and/or his family were having second thoughts. Whispers of a change of mind grew to a roar. Then, all of a sudden, the social media teams at USC announced that Burch's paperwork made it in, and he was a Gamecock officially.
Two years of minimal production followed before a solid 2022 season. After sticking around for the bowl game that season, Burch turned down the NFL but then transferred seemingly overnight to Oregon. Allegedly, he regretted the decision and made multiple attempts to transfer back to South Carolina, but nothing solidified.
He will return to the Ducks in 2024 for his final year of eligibility, but Jordan Burch's 2020 Signing Day and underwhelming career will be remembered for a long time around Columbia.
