South Carolina Football: Elite quarterback prospect to commit soon, visiting Columbia even sooner
By Kevin Miller
Right now, the South Carolina football program has two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster, and only one of them is on campus. Rising redshirt freshman LaNorris Sellers is the presumed starter heading into 2024, and incoming 4-star Dante Reno will enroll in January.
The Gamecocks are expected to take a veteran in the transfer portal to compete with Sellers and provide the quarterback room with some depth, but after high-profile misses on Vanderbilt transfer AJ Swann and former Texas Longhorn Maalik Murphy, it is unclear who USC might bring in from the portal.
As far as the future goes, Carolina already has a commitment in from 2026 4-star Landon Duckworth, and they have a couple of targets in the 2025 class, as well. One of the team's major targets in the class is 4-star Findlay, Ohio native Ryan Montgomery.
Montgomery has broken several impressive records in the state of Ohio, and he put out a top-5 that included South Carolina football last fall. However, his recruitment has appeared much more open than that. USC is joined by announced finalists Florida, Georgia, Michigan, and Penn State and teams like Auburn, Ohio State, Michigan State, Louisville, and Missouri have all been mentioned in conversations about Montgomery.
According to a report from 247Sports' Allen Trieu, Montgomery is nearing a commitment date. Before making a college pledge, however, Montgomery plans to visit the South Carolina football program, a good sign for the Gamecocks.
As a player, Montgomery has a quick release and has shown big-time accuracy at the high school level, winning the Accuracy Award at the Under Armour Future 50 camp. As a multi-sport athlete who excels on the basketball court, as well, Montgomery is a better athlete than most players who are labeled as "pocket passers" by the recruiting industry.
At 6'3" and 215 pounds, Montgomery has good size to grow into an even stronger arm at the college level, and his high school production (All-State in Ohio as a junior) indicates he has what it takes to put up numbers against good competition.
