South Carolina football target named top-3 player in transfer portal
By Kevin Miller
The transfer portal is hopping, and, despite not being done with spring practice yet, South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer and his staff are already involved with some players who could help the Gamecocks.
Recent transfer portal addition Cormani McClain (sophomore cornerback, Colorado Buffaloes) is one such player.
McClain entered the transfer portal on Tuesday after spending one season in Boulder with the Colorado Buffaloes. The former 5-star cornerback was the top-ranked player at his position coming out of high school, but his time playing for Coach Prime Deion Sanders had some ups and downs. By the end of the season, though, McClain was starting, and his head coach repeatedly talked about how proud he was of the young man.
On Wednesday, 247Sports updated their transfer portal player rankings, and McClain cracked their top-10 uncommitted players list. In fact, he slotted in at #3, behind only offensive linemen Kayden Proctor (who might as well be re-committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide after transferring to Iowa and then entering the portal again) and Jason Zandamaya (transferring out of Southern Cal).
McClain is an extremely talented defensive back who possesses special athleticism and length. At 6'2", he fits the archetype of the type of cornerback that Gamecock defensive back coach Torrian Gray likes to utilize on the outside, so it only makes sense that the South Carolina football coaching staff is interested.
Speaking of Torrian Gray, the USC assistant coach is from Lakeland, Florida, the same hometown as Cormani McClain. The relationship between the two could get the Gamecocks a look during McClain's "second recruitment" if he is willing to leave the state of Florida again. He was committed to the Miami Hurricanes at one time in high school and the Florida Gators were involved, as well.
