South Carolina Football: Gamecocks part ways with 4-star commitment
By Kevin Miller
The South Carolina football program is having a big day. The Gamecocks have signed almost the entirety of their 2024 recruiting class, bringing in prospects from high school, junior college, and the transfer portal.
Potentially lost in the busy news day is the update that a long-time Gamecock commitment is no longer part of the class.
4-star athlete Zy'marion Lang was recruited by the South Carolina football staff as a defensive back, but there were always rumblings that Lang wanted to play wide receiver at the college level. No real updates came out regarding his future position, but when National Signing Day rolled around, the Florida native was no longer going to be signing with the Gamecocks.
Instead, Lang signed with Toledo.
The step down in school shows that there was not a decommitment from the player. While nothing officially crossed the news wires, it would seem that the Gamecocks parted ways with Lang. Perhaps the disagreement over his position was the culprit.
No matter what the reason, though, Zy'marion Lang is not going to be part of the South Carolina football program.
The Gamecocks have already signed high school wide receivers Mazeo Bennett (4-star) and Debron Gatling (3-star) and transfer portal addition Jared Brown (Coastal Carolina). Jayden McGowan (Vanderbilt) announced a verbal commitment to the Gamecocks but there are doubts as to whether he will move that commitment to a signed NLI.
They have also brought in high school defensive backs Kelvin Hunter (4-star S), Jalewis Solomon (4-star CB), and David Bucey (3-star S) and transfer portal DB Gerald Kilgore.
4-star high school corner Braydon Lee announced around 12:30 that he was flipping his commitment from the Gamecocks to his home state Maryland Terrapins.
The Gamecocks could be in line to bring in another player or two at receiver or corner from the transfer portal before the second portal window closes after spring practice.
