This offseason, South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer and his staff had several big needs for the 2024 season they hoped to address. Immediate needs like running back, wide receiver, EDGE, and linebacker were addressed through the transfer portal. Other holes on the roster are future issues and have been emphasized in high school recruiting efforts.
One of these big future needs is defensive tackle. Heading into the new year, USC had just one player at the defensive tackle position with more than two years of eligibility remaining, so the Gamecocks have to receive an infusion of young talent over the next two offseasons.
Things got started two weeks ago when 4-star hybrid defensive end/defensive tackle Caleb Williams committed to the program, but the Gamecocks are hoping to add more than one defensive tackle this recruiting cycle. One of their major targets is Georgia 4-star Kevin Wynn.
Several months ago, Wynn announced his top-10 schools, and the University of South Carolina was on his list. Now, the big tackle is finalizing his official visit plans, and according to a report from 247Sports' Benjamin Wolk, the Gamecocks will have Wynn on campus next month. With visits also scheduled with the Georgia Bulldogs, Texas Longhorns, and Florida State Seminoles, he is set to be in Columbia on the weekend of June 7th.
As a prospect, Wynn is a 4-star recruit according to On3, 247Sports, and ESPN, and at 6'3" and 320 pounds, he is a true interior force at defensive tackle. He is ranked as high as 55th by 247Sports.
Wynn is a space-eater on the interior of the defensive line, but he has more athleticism than one might expect from a player his size. He flashes some pass rush chops on film as he can dominate with his size and strength or catch offensive lineman off-guard with his deceptive quickness off the ball.
You can watch some of his film.
