South Carolina Football: Mike Golic Jr. puts Spencer Rattler in NFL Draft 1st round

South Carolina football has only had two quarterback selected in the history of the NFL Draft, and Jeff Grantz (17th round, 1976) and Todd Ellis (9th round, 1990) would not have been selected in the modern 7-round format.

Spencer Rattler will bring that number to 3 this April. The Sooner-turned-Gamecock was excellent in 2023 despite playing behind one of the worst offensive lines in the country and having the South Carolina football program's worst-ever rushing attack complimenting him.

Rattler's NFL Draft stock has been all over the place. Some analysts seem to think he is late-round pick as several mock drafts have Rattler listed as a 5th or 6th-round selection. Others believe Rattler could push into the draft's top-50 at the back end of the 1st round or the front end of the 2nd.

Mike Golic, Jr., on his show GoJo and Golic (one he co-hosts with his father, long-time ESPN personality Mike Golic), showed that he is one of voices higher on Spencer Rattler than most. The former Notre Dame star and NFL lineman was asked by host Claudia Bellofatto about which quarterbacks would be taken in the 1st round, and Golic, Jr. named five.

Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels have long been considered the consensus top-3, and now JJ McCarthy has entered the top-10 pick discussion. In addition to those four players, though, Golic Jr. picked Spencer Rattler as a 1st round quarterback.

The younger Golic acknowledged that this opinion required him to "go out on a limb," but he said the buzz surrounding Rattler in NFL circles is growing louder and louder.

Rattler's draft future is not yet known, but he is talented enough that a 1st round pick is not out of the question, especially with the 2025 quarterback class being one that is expected to be lacking in big-time talents.
