South Carolina Football 2024 Schedule History:
Out-Of-Conference Opponents

South Carolina football always has a tough schedule. Some years, that schedule is the hardest in the country, and that usually comes about because USC schedules a difficult out-of-conference opponent or two to go along with the annual rivalry game against the Clemson Tigers.

Theoretically, that should not be the case in 2024 as Clemson is the only non-conference game on the docket that is against a program from a power conference. The schedule is still difficult (an SEC slate plus Clemson is never easy), but it isn't quite the gauntlet that Carolina faced last season that was rated as the toughest in college football. The opener already has had its television and kickoff time revealed.

The 2024 schedule includes games:
Old Dominion Monarchs
Akron Zips
Wofford Terriers
@ Clemson Tigers

History vs. Old Dominion Monarchs

South Carolina football has never played against the Old Dominion Monarchs, but that will change in week 1 this season when the two meet up at Williams-Brice Stadium on August 31st. Kickoff time has been set for 4:15 PM ET, and the game will be broadcast on the SEC Network and streamed on the ESPN app.

Old Dominion brought back its football program in 2009 after 70 years without a team. They quickly moved up to the FBS level after a few seasons in the FCS, and the Norfolk, Virginia-based squad will travel to down to Columbia for their first game against an SEC foe since they played Vanderbilt back in 2014.

History vs. Akron Zips

The Gamecocks have only faced off with Akron once in the history of the football programs. Back in 2018, USC was slated to face the Marshall Thundering Herd, but Hurricane Florence canceled a lot of college football games during the September 15th weekend, including the Carolina-Marshall showdown.

Athletic director Ray Tanner and then-head coach Will Muschamp secured a replacement game, though, and the Akron Zips came to Columbia for a rare December regular season game. Playing the week after the Clemson game, despite avoiding the hurricane in September, Carolina beat Akron in a rain-soaked affair that saw several players injured due to the wet turf.

The 'Cocks and the Zips will play on September 21st before a brutal stretch of the schedule for USC that includes games against Ole Miss, Alabama (on the road), and Oklahoma (on the road).

Last game: 28-3 Gamecock victory at Williams-Brice Stadium in 2018

History vs. Wofford Terriers

Wofford and South Carolina have played five times since the Terriers moved up to the FCS level from Division-II. The two teams played some way back in the day, but because of the level difference between the two programs and the shoddy records from back then, accurate and thorough results are hard to find.

However, the November 23rd meeting will mark Wofford's sixth trip to Williams-Brice Stadium since the Terriers moved up to the Division-I level. Carolina has won them all, but two of them were played within 10 points as Wofford's triple-option scheme was not easy to deal with when they had the right players on campus. They no longer run the option, though.

Gamecocks lead series 5-0*
Last game: Gamecock victory 31-10 in Williams-Brice Stadium in 2017

History vs. Clemson Tigers

One of the fiercest rivalries in all of college football is played in the Palmetto State as the South Carolina Gamecocks and Clemson Tigers simply don't like each other. The history of the matchup has favored that team from the Upstate, and USC has only won 1 of the last 9 matchups.

The rivalry has been much closer since the start of WWII than, though, as a 26-11-1 record for Clemson got them off to a hot start. If the Gamecocks are to begin the reversal of the trend in the Palmetto State rivalry, they will need a win on the road on November 30th.

Tigers lead series 73-43-4
Last game: Tiger victory 17-6 at Williams-Brice Stadium in 2023
