South Carolina football fans have fond memories of Dylan Thompson. The former Gamecock quarterback was lightly recruited out of high school but worked hard enough to set the USC single-season record for passing yards (3574 yards in 2014, which led the SEC), have some huge moments off the bench in relief of the GOAT Connor Shaw when he was injured, and leave his mark on the program as an even better person than he was a player.
After his time in garnet and black ended, Thompson spent parts of three years in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams. When his playing days were over, though, he stayed in sports and, eventually, was back in the NFL.
Thompson worked at Charleston Southern University as the Director of Player Development for the Buccaneers men's basketball team before returning to the NFL as a character coach with the Detroit Lions. Then, he was the Director of Player Development for the Houston Texans. Pro Bowl rookie quarterback CJ Stroud credited Thompson as a major reason for his tremendous first year in the NFL, and Pro Bowl EDGE Will Anderson sang Thompson's praises, as well.
Now, Thompson is on the move in the NFL again, this time returning to the East Coast.
According to a report from Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 in Houston, the Washington Commanders are hiring Thompson to fill the same position with their franchise as he will be the team's Director of Player/Team Development.
Thompson will join a Washington team that went 4-13 last season and is welcoming in a brand new coaching staff led by new head coach Dan Quinn. Washington has only won the NFC East once in the last eight seasons, but Thompson will look to play a role in righting the ship for the once proud franchise.
