On Tuesday, the Gamecocks picked up a commitment from former Florida State Seminoles wide receiver Vandrevius Jacobs, and just a few hours later, they secured another pledge for the receiver room.
According to a post on his personal Instagram account, Nevada Wolfpack transfer wideout Dalevon Campbell has committed to the South Carolina football program.
From a physical standpoint, Campbell fits the exact archetype of receiver the Gamecocks need on the roster. Before his commitment, only two USC receivers were listed as taller than 6'1" as 6'5" Nyck Harbor (who hasn't been with the team much due to track obligations) and 6'2" CJ Adams (who is injured and hasn't seen game action) were the only bigger-bodied players in the wide receiver room.
Now, with Campbell in the fold, the Gamecocks have a proven performer who gives them enough size and athleticism to feel good about their chances in jump ball and contested catch situations. He's a good deep ball threat as his 6'4", 215-pound frame provides a large catch radius.
Campbell began his career with the Illinois Fighting Illini, and after not seeing much action with Illinois (just 6 catches in three seasons), he put up about 1050 yards in the past two years with the Nevada Wolfpack. In 2023, he averaged over 19 yards per catch.
Campbell has legitimate starting potential for the 2024 version of Shane Beamer's South Carolina football team, and his addition likely marks the end of the Gamecocks' search for help at the receiver position.
Along with fellow transfers Gage Larvadain, Jared Brown, and Ahmari Huggins-Bruce and less-proven Gamecocks like Tyshawn Russell, Nyck Harbor, Vandrevius Jacobs, and Mazeo Bennett, Campbell seems immediately set to join the receiver rotation during summer workouts.
A true X or Z receiver for offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains, Campbell is the 85th scholarship player on the roster, meaning that the South Carolina football team is at scholarship capacity unless another player leaves the program.
