South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer and his program are red hot on the recruiting trail. Just as the fanbase was getting antsy about the class of 2025, the Gamecocks have started reeling in highly-ranked prospects in the past couple of weeks.
On Sunday, the most recent of these players announced a commitment to the program as Virginia defensive lineman Caleb Williams revealed that he was pledging his services to the Gamecocks.
Williams is a 4-star prospect according to 247Sports, and he is yet another DMV/Virginia recruit to choose the South Carolina football program during the Shane Beamer era.
As a player, Williams is a bit of a "tweener" who plays both defensive end and defensive tackle at the high school level. Depending on how the USC strength program changes his body could determine what position he plays as a collegiate lineman.
Williams is listed at 6'6" and 260 pounds, a great weight for a strongside defensive end. If he stays that size while he gains muscle, he could be a defensive end for the Gamecocks. However, if he gets bigger, he could be a dangerously athletic defensive tackle in the future.
On film, he has shown some really good club and swim moves that should translate to college ball. He is not an overwhelming athlete at the defensive end position, but he is athletic enough to be disruptive. When he kicks inside (or even just as an end with a tighter split), he becomes a different type of matchup problem. That versatility could be a big skill for him when he arrives in Columbia.
The Gamecocks will have a decision to make on his future position, but whether Williams is an end, a tackle, or a combination of them both, South Carolina football got a good football player in the fold on Sunday.
