South Carolina Football: Big Gamecock Weekend is back
By Kevin Miller
Once again this year, South Carolina football will play its annual Garnet and Black Spring Game under the lights of Williams-Brice Stadium. The Gamecocks will conclude its spring practice with its biggest intra-squad scrimmage at 7:00 PM EST on April 20th.
As part of the fun around the spring game, USC is bringing back the Big Gamecock Weekend. With the spring game scheduled for the 20th, the Big Gamecock Weekend will go from April 19th to April 21st.
Only some of the details have been announced for the weekend so far, but in addition to the Garnet and Black Spring Game, South Carolina football fans will have the opportunity to participate in the Cocky Trot 5k Fun Run/Walk and a Junior Gamecock Club movie night at Williams-Brice Stadium. This year's featured movie is Wonka, the 2023 adaptation of the old Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005).
If this year's Big Gamecock Weekend is like last year's celebration, there likely will be a concert or two (Patrick Davis and his Midnight Choir performed in 2023), food trucks and vendors galore, and the official schedule poster reveal.
The Garnet and Black Spring Game is free to the public, and so is the Junior Gamecock Club movie night (for Junior Gamecock Club members and their guests). The movie night will require online registration, while the spring game will be available to however many South Carolina football fans show up at Williams-Brice Stadium.
Last year's Garnet and Black Spring Game served as a bit of an introduction to Gamecock Nation for true freshman quarterback LaNorris Sellers. Now, as a redshirt freshman and expected starter, Sellers' showing in the 2024 spring game will (rightfully or wrongfully) color many fans' perspectives on how the 2024 season might go for the Gamecocks.
