South Carolina Football: Shane Beamer announces another #WelcomeHome on Tuesday
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer announced a #WelcomeHome on Monday, and on Tuesday, news broke that the mystery commitment was former Oregon and Auburn quarterback Robby Ashford. The dual-threat quarterback will join walk-on transfer portal addition Davis Beville as veteran competition for expected starter LaNorris Sellers.
Just a few minutes after the initial reports about Ashford surfaced, the Gamecock headman dropped another #WelcomeHome to send the online fanbase into a frenzy.
No obvious clues or symbols were included in the message as it just included the words "Let's Go," the patented #WelcomeHome, a GIF of Gamecock fans, and a lot of exclamation points. However, the lack of any further hashtags indicates that this commitment is another transfer portal addition.
While Ashford certainly was one of the two Beamer-announced commitments, the second one has not yet been revealed.
Some fans have speculated as to whether one could be former Gamecock-turned-Florida-State-Seminole-turned-Gamecock-again Gilber Edmond who has been reported as returning to the South Carolina football program for his final year of eligibility. Based on how much time passed between Edmond's news breaking and the first #WelcomeHome, that seems unlikely.
There have been a number of other transfer portal players who have made their way to Columbia for a visit this offseason. The Gamecocks are still in the market for good players at wide receiver, offensive line, and cornerback, and any big-time difference-maker would be considered, as well.
Essentially, South Carolina football fans should be unsurprised if their favorite team picks up a transfer portal player from almost anywhere on the field. Outside of quarterback, running back, and defensive tackle, the Gamecocks could make room for just about any talent that could help the team.
If this transfer is like the others, he will come forward shortly, so fans should not be waiting too long before they know the identity of the Gamecocks' newest football player.
