The NFL Draft ended on Saturday night, and South Carolina football finished the three-day event with four players selected. Wide receiver Xavier Legette (1st round, Carolina Panthers), quarterback Spencer Rattler (5th round, New Orleans Saints), defensive back Marcellas Dial (6th round, New England Patriots), and offensive lineman Nick Gargiulo (7th round, Denver Broncos) all fulfilled their dreams of becoming NFL players.
Those four were not the only Gamecocks to start their NFL journeys, however.
Earlier this month, running back/special teamer Dante Miller signed a free agent deal with the New York Giants, and Dakereon Joyner received an invite to rookie camp with the Seattle Seahawks right after the draft ended.
Another USC alum signed a deal shortly after the draft ended, as well. According to a report from NFL Draft Diamonds, the group that scouts for the Hula Bowl, South Carolina football alum Ahmarean Brown has signed an undrafted free agent contract with the Cleveland Browns.
Brown, who attended the Hula Bowl this offseason, was one of the early names reported as an undrafted free agent signing, and there is one primary reason why he was a no-brainer for the NFL: speed. Ahmarean Brown will instantly become one of the fastest (if not the fastest) players with the Browns the moment he steps into the facility in Cleveland.
Brown has been clocked in the 4.2s in the 40-yard dash and ran laser-timed 4.30 and 4.31 times at the Gamecocks Pro Day. He's not just straight-line fast, though, as Brown has elite wiggle with the ball in his hands, too.
The former Gamecock would seem to have a strong chance of making the roster with the Browns thanks to that speed and his potential impact on special teams as a return man and gunner. Cleveland's front office must agree because Brown was given a sizeable guarantee on his contract much larger than the type given to most undrafted free agent signings.
