South Carolina Football: Gamecocks pick up SIXTH transfer portal commitment
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina football fans might be experiencing transfer portal whiplash.
Last week, the Gamecocks had 17 players enter the transfer portal, and it seemed like every few hours there was a new name being reported as a departure.
This week, South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer and his staff have begun working to replenish the roster with scholarship talent.
So far, the Gamecocks have had five reported players who have pledged themselves to the Gamecocks. Defensive tackle Jerome Simmons, wide receiver Jared Brown, running back Oscar Adaway, running back Rocket Sanders, and wide receiver Jayden McGowan have all been reported as (or have themselves announced) commitments to the South Carolina football program.
Around 6:00 on Wednesday, Beamer dropped a 6th #WelcomeHome tweet to the Gamecock Faithful on social media.
No formal announcement or reporting has been made public regarding the commitment's identity, but Beamer's tweet seemed to indicate that the player was in his office recently, indicating that is was a player who on campus for a visit. Defensive tackle Deandre Jules (Pittsburgh), quarterback AJ Swann (Vanderbilt), and running back Jawarn Howell (South Carolina State) were all in Columbia on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Jules is a big defensive tackle who has some pass rush juice to go along with his ability stuff the run with his 6'3" and 315-pound frame. He is a plus-athlete for the position, as well, as evidenced by the fact that he played tight end in high school.
Swann was the starting signal-caller at Vandy before an injury caused him to lose his job. If he were to pick the Gamecocks, he would come to compete with redshirt freshman LaNorris Sellers for the starting quarterback job.
Howell had a big freshman year for the SC State Bulldogs (almost 100 yards per game), and he is one of the top young backs left in the transfer portal. The Gamecocks have already taken two running backs, but they are both upperclassmen.
