South Carolina football fans are used to their favorite team being ranked highly in terms of strength of schedule. Playing in the SEC, playing Clemson every season, and often including out-of-conference games against Power-4 schools from North Carolina, Virginia, and Florida makes the Gamecock slate among the most difficult in college football each year.
2024 will be no different for the South Carolina Gamecocks.
Earlier in the fall, the SEC schedule was revealed, but the order of games was not yet known. On Wednesday, though, the SECNetwork broadcast an additional schedule reveal show, and now Gamecock Nation knows the entirety of the tough road ahead for the garnet and black.
The Gamecocks will play their first game in August against Old Dominion for the first-ever matchup between the two teams. That is not the only first of the season, though, as South Carolina football has never played the Oklahoma Sooners but will travel to Norman next fall. The Gamecocks also will get two bye weeks in 2024 before home contests against Ole Miss and Texas A&M.
October is brutal for the Gamecocks as they play three top-12 teams in the current College Football Playoff standings (Alabama is #4, Ole Miss is #11, and Oklahoma is #12), and two of those games (Alabama and Oklahoma) are on the road.
For Gamecock fans who still have bad memories of the 2015 The Citadel Bulldogs or worse memories of a 1984 Navy Midshipmen team, the Wofford Terries do not run the triple option anymore.
At least there is some bright side to the 2024 South Carolina football schedule.
