South Carolina Basketball: Former Gamecocks to face off in new arena because of high ticket demand

South Carolina basketball legends A'ja Wilson and Aliyah Boston will face off as their Las Vegas Aces and Indiana Fever play in Las Vegas in July.

South Carolina basketball fans almost universally agree that the two top players in program history (with all due to respect to All-Americans like Kamilla Cardoso, Sheila Foster, Evelyn Johnson, Tiffany Mitchell, Brea Beal, Te-Hina Paopao, Ty Harris, Jocelyn Penn, Zia Cooke, and Shannon Johnson) are post player A'ja Wilson and Aliyah Boston.

The two GOATs missed each other by just one full season with the Gamecocks (Wilson finished her college plays days with the 2017-2018 season, Boston started her career with the 2019-2020 campaign), but they both were WNBA All-Star Game starters on the same team this past season, and they have faced off a couple of times in the W. The current best player in the league (Wilson) vs. one of the best young talents (Boston) creates one of the most-watched matchups in the WNBA.

Next season, as Boston's Indiana Fever are expected to draft Iowa's Caitlin Clark with the top pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, the Fever vs. Las Vegas Aces game scheduled for July 2nd is drawing record-breaking interest. A'ja Wilson, Aliyah Boston, Caitlin Clark, Candace Parker, Kelsey Plum, Chelsea Gray, Sydney Colson, Alysha Clark, Jackie Young, and Kelsey Mitchell will all be on the same floor, so the interest makes perfect sense.

The expected ticket demand is so high, in fact, that the Las Vegas Aces have decided not to play the game in their home venue, the Michelob Ultra Arena at Mandalay Bay. Instead, the game will be played at T-Mobile Arena, a venue that can hold over 6000 more fans than Michelob Ultra Arena.

The defending WNBA champs (from both 2022 and 2023) will host what likely will be the most fun young team in the league, and no matter which team wins, the fans of women's basketball will be the true winners.

Former South Carolina basketball stars Victaria Saxton (Fever) and Brea Beal (Aces) are currently on the two rosters and hope to stick with their respective teams this season.
