South Carolina Basketball: Tip time, TV network set for Gamecocks' NCAA Tournament game vs Oregon
By Kevin Miller
Lamont Paris and the South Carolina basketball team will be traveling up to Pittsburgh to take on the Oregon Ducks in the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament this week. The Gamecocks have been comfortably in the Big Dance for some time, while March Madness started a bit early for the Ducks. Former Gamecock Jermaine Couisnard and his Oregon team had to win the Pac-12 Tournament to sneak into the Big Dance.
South Carolina is the slightly better team, but Oregon is hot and a good team in their own right. This one has the makings of a really good 1st round, 6-11 matchup as the 6th-seeded Gamecocks and 11th-seeded Ducks face off for fowl supremacy.
Late on Sunday night, a few hours after the bracket was revealed, the tip-off time and broadcast network for the contest was announced. South Carolina basketball fans and Oregon Duck fans will be tuning in to TNT (or the TNT app or March Madness Live app) at 4:00 PM EST for the first tip. The game will be played in PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the home of the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League.
The Gamecocks will be the home team as the higher seed, and fans can assume that they will wear their white jerseys. However, earlier this year, South Carolina rolled out their black uniforms at home for a blackout against the Kentucky Wildcats. With a blackout not happening in this one, the white uniforms seem the more likely attire.
The location of the game is interesting as Lamont Paris' one NCAA Tournament appearance two years ago at Chattanooga ended with a loss in Pittsburgh. It is also the city where the Gamecocks suffered their most infamous loss in program history, a 2-seed vs. 15-seed upset at the hands of Coppin State.
The University of South Carolina is 1 of 22 in the country to put both their men's and their women's team into the NCAA Tournament. They have the best combined record (58-7) and the 2nd-best combined seeds (1 and 6; only behind UConn's 1 and 3).
