ICYMI: South Carolina basketball set an SEC record with big LSU win last night
By Kevin Miller
In case you have been living under a rock, South Carolina basketball coach Dawn Staley and her team traveled to Baton Rouge, Louisiana and knocked off the LSU Tigers in a classic on Thursday night. The Gamecocks had a rough 1st half and trailed by 11 points, but a late 1st half surge paired with a much stronger final 20 minutes to bring about the Carolina victory.
What many might not realize, however, is that the Gamecock win on the Bayou set an all-time record.
Never before had an SEC team won 28 straight games on the road before South Carolina basketball pulled off the feat on Thursday night. In fact, the new SEC all-time record is just two shy of UConn's 3rd-best mark of 30-straight victories on the road. UConn also holds the #2 (34) and #1 (55) spots on that list.
South Carolina is still a long way from challenging that NCAA record, but they will have the opportunity to move into the 3rd spot this season and the 4th spot next year if they just keep winning. The Gamecocks also will have an opportunity to move into the top-10 in all-time home winning streaks next year, as well, as they have won 49 in a row at Colonial Life Arena.
The Gamecocks' last loss on the road came in a questionably officiated overtime contest in Columbia, Missouri against the Mizzou Tigers, a game that only went to overtime after multiple missed calls went against the Gamecocks late in regulation, preventing their comeback efforts from putting them ahead on the scoreboard.
South Carolina basketball will hit the hardwood again on Sunday when they welcome the Vanderbilt Commodores to Colonial Life Arena for a sold-out game at 3:00. The conference matchup will be broadcast on the SECNetwork and ESPN app.
