South Carolina basketball legend A'ja Wilson becomes most prolific scorer in WNBA history
By Kevin Miller
It was only a matter of time, but on Wednesday night, A'ja Wilson became the most prolific scorer in WNBA history. The South Carolina basketball legend entered the night just 10 points shy of the single-season scoring record (one that was set by Jewell Loyd during the 2023 season), and in the closing seconds of the 1st half, she rose up and hit a midrange jumper to set the new standard of 941 points in a single season. That number will only grow as the Aces have four more regular season games remaining and another quarter to play on Wednesday night.
At the time of this publication, Wilson had notched another double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds with another full quarter left to play. Her Las Vegas Aces squad led the Indiana Fever by a score of 64-57 heading into the final period.
The post matchup was a good one as fellow South Carolina basketball alum Aliyah Boston spent much of the game lined up across from Wilson. At the time of this publication, Boston also had pulled down double-digit rebounds, but her Gamecock predecessor had limited her aggressiveness a bit by helping get Boston into foul trouble in the 3rd period.
Here is the box score from the game.
A'ja Wilson's season has been the best in the history of the WNBA. Not only has she set a new record for points scored, but she has a very legitimate shot at setting an all-time record for single-season rebounding, as well (though, props should be given to Angel Reese who broke the previous record this year but suffered a season-ending injury that will allow Wilson to pass her statistical total). Wilson also leads the WNBA in blocked shots and is on pace to shatter the previous record for Player Efficiency Rating.
Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces have secured a spot in the WNBA postseason, and the Aces are going for their third straight WNBA Finals championship this fall. While injuries and a thin bench have caused some problems for Vegas at times this season, most basketball analysts still view the Aces as one of the favorites to hoist the trophy once again.
