It was a good Friday night for Joyce Edwards. Just a few days after officially being named a McDonald's All-American, the South Carolina basketball signee was honored during a pregame ceremony for her decorated high school career. She was presented with a pair of custom Jordans to mark her achievements and celebrate the impact she has had on Camden High School basketball.
It is only fitting that she had the best game of her career as a follow-up.
Edwards had a ridiculous night on the hardwood, dropping in 52 points on 22-26 shooting from the field while flirting with a quadruple-double. In the 62-point win, her 18 rebounds, 9 assists, 8 steals, and 5 blocks saw her easily eclipse the famed "five-by-five" stat line as she put up numbers that would make video game basketball players jealous.
Joyce Edwards is the #2-ranked player in the country according to most recruiting services, and the 5-star is regarded as the top defensive player in the class. The fact that she put up a 52-point game speaks to what she can do on the other end of the court, as well.
In setting her career-high, she became the first girls' basketball player in the Palmetto State to have a 50-point game since another name who should be familiar to South Carolina basketball fans: MiLaysia Fulwiley accomplished the feat as a senior at Keenan High School.
Edwards and Fulwiley will be part of Coach Dawn Staley's young core in Columbia for years to come as the Gamecocks look to continue their run as the best program in all of women's college basketball. USC currently is ranked #1 in the country and is the only undefeated team left in the nation. With the graduation of Kamilla Cardoso after this season, she the 6'3" dynamo will compete for playing time in the Carolina frontcourt next year.
