South Carolina Basketball: 3 thumbs up, 3 thumbs down from domination of Kentucky
By Kevin Miller
On Thursday, South Carolina basketball coach Dawn Staley and her team clinched a share of the SEC regular season championship when they blew out the Alabama Crimson Tide. On Sunday, they made sure they won the title outright with a 103-55 beatdown of the Kentucky Wildcats in Rupp Arena.
Kamilla Cardoso was out again with soreness, but the Gamecocks didn't miss a beat. 7 different players (Bree Hall, MiLaysia Fulwiley, Sania Feagin, Chloe Kitts, Ashlyn Watkins, Te-Hina Paopao, and Raven Johnson) finished the game with at least 9 points, and 7 players finished the game with at least 3 assists (Fulwiley, Feagin, Kitts, Johnson, Watkins, Paopao, and Tessa Johnson) as USC shot 64%/67% and assisted on 30 of their 38 buckets.
The onslaught was non-stop as Carolina scored at least 25 points in 3 of 4 quarters and held Kentucky under 15 in 3 of 4 periods. The attack came from all sides as every player shot at least 50% from the field and recorded at least one block or steal.
Ajae Petty and Maddie Scherr did what they could for the Wildcats (combined for 27 points on 11-19 shooting and 12 rebounds), but the rest of the team combined to score 28 points while shooting 24% from the field and 28% from 3.
The Gamecocks did not score 100 points against UK the first time they played (they scored 98), but they crossed the triple-digit threshold with some free throws from MiLaysia Fulwiley and a 3-pointer from Bree Hall.
Chloe Kitts logged a double-double, and Sania Feagin set career-high totals in scoring (16) and blocked shots (5). Bree Hall led the game in scoring with 18, and MiLaysia Fulwiley added 17, including a 12-12 day from the free throw line.
