South Carolina Baseball ranked in top-15 of another preseason poll
By Kevin Miller
College baseball fans know that there are approximately 2348389324 polls and rankings for the sport. South Carolina baseball has found themselves ranked inside the top-25 in all of the released polls so far, with most of their selections sitting somewhere between 10-15. D1Baseball is a bit of an outlier in their views on the Gamecocks, picking USC 25th in their preseason poll.
Another ranking came out this week as the NCBWA (National College Baseball Writers Association) released their preseason top-30.
South Carolina baseball came in at #15 according to the NCBWA, a spot that is good for 7th in the SEC. Carolina finished 13th in the final NCBWA poll of 2023. The rival Clemson Tigers are 12th in the preseason poll, and border rival North Carolina Tar Heels are 16th, just one spot behind the Gamecocks.
USC has high expectations coming into this spring as evidenced by their lofty rankings in the preseason polls. After a Super Regional appearance last year, the Gamecocks are hoping to extend their postseason run to Omaha for the first time since 2012, a season that ended with the 'Cocks' third-straight trip to the National Championship Series (they won in 2010 and 2011, lost in 2012).
The road to a potential College World Series will be a tough one, however.
Mark Kingston's team has a tough schedule in 2024 (like always), and, just in the regular season, they play against eight teams in the top-23 of the NCBWA poll. Florida (3), Arkansas (4), Tennessee (5), Vanderbilt (7), Texas A&M (10), Clemson (12), North Carolina (16), and Alabama (23) are on the docket for the 2024 version of the YardCocks.
