South Carolina Baseball: Gamecock legend fires Scott Boras
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina baseball legend Jordan Montgomery has been a good pitcher in Major League Baseball since his call-up in 2017 with the New York Yankees. However, since the Covid-shortened 2020 season ended, the man called Gumby has gotten a little better each year until he reached star status in 2023.
Montgomery pitched for the New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, and Texas Rangers from 2021-2023 and posted an ERA of 3.48 as he offered unique consistency as one of the steadiest left-handed starting pitchers in baseball.
The 6'6" Summerville, South Carolina native entered the 2023-2024 offseason as one of the top free agents on the market, and everyone around Major League Baseball believed he would be in for a lucrative, long-term contract with a contending team.
Instead, March began with Montgomery still hanging out in free agency. As teams were finalizing their Big League rosters, the former South Carolina baseball star didn't sign with a team until March 26th when he signed a 1-year, $25 Million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
It was an unfortunate failure by Montgomery's representation, and because of that, he is making a change. After working with superagent Scott Boras previously, Jordan Montgomery fired Boras and hired Wasserman's Joel Wolfe and Nick Chanock to replace him immediately.
The move is a big deal in the MLB agent world, but it isn't much of a surprise when one looks at Boras' recent track record. This offseason, in addition to Montgomery's late signing, Boras clients like Blake Snell, Cody Bellinger, JD Martinez, and Matt Chapman (all believed to be high-dollars free agents) signed late and for numbers below expected value and/or for fewer years than anticipated.
Montgomery's target date for his return is April 19th. When he takes the field with the Arizona Diamondbacks (whether it's April 19th or another day), he will be reunited with former South Carolina baseball teammate Christian Walker.
