Shane Beamer's South Carolina football team had a performance that he called "awful" during a postgame interview, but in the end, the Gamecocks wound up winning a much-closer-than-expected game against the Old Dominion Monarchs.

USC got off to a great start, forcing a turnover inside the 10-yard line and creating an easy opening touchdown. However, they immediately allowed the score to be tied after an explosive play to ODU's Isiah Paige.

From there, both offenses really struggled until halftime as the Gamecocks managed two field goals, and ODU didn't score again. Old Dominion took a brief lead in the 4th quarter, but another fumble recovery in the red zone provided the Gamecocks with the field position needed for what would be the go-ahead touchdown run from quarterback LaNorris Sellers.

Other than a fatigue-fueled tough stretch in the 3rd quarter and one long play on the opening drive, the Gamecock defense played very well. The Carolina EDGE players, especially Kyle Kennard and Dylan Stewart, were wreaking havoc all game, combining for 9 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, and 4 forced fumbles.

Offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains and quarterback LaNorris Sellers did not have banner days on Saturday. Part of their struggles stem from poor offensive line play as the Gamecocks gave up 4 sacks and averaged just over 3 yards per carry before the kneel downs at the end of the game.

Below is the report card grades for the Gamecocks' 23-19 victory.
