Patrick Mannelly Award names South Carolina football senior to preseason watch list
By Kevin Miller
The 2024 edition of the South Carolina football team, like most of the rest of the teams in the sport, begins fall camp this week. That means that the season is drawing near (33 days from kickoff for the Gamecocks), and that also means it is "list season."
Whether it is online pundits, national media, or award voters, it feels like everyone is making lists this time of year. On Monday, Carolina running back Rocket Sanders was included on the Maxwell Award preseason watch list. He was joined in the award list conversation a little while later by one of his teammates.
Rogers is 1 of 30 long snappers from around the country to be chosen for the preseason list as one of the top deep snappers in the sport.
The most well-known moment of his South Carolina football career came in the 2022 Gator Bowl against Notre Dame when he caught a touchdown pass from punter Kai Kroeger on a patented Pete Lembo special teams gadget play. He also was responsible for redirecting Clemson Tigers return man Antonio Williams before Nate Adkins forced the game-sealing fumble (recovered by Nick Emmanwori) in the 2022 rivalry matchup.
Barring more trick plays (which are still a possibility under new special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis), Rogers might not hear his name called all season. If that is the case, that means he is doing a great job of delivering accurate snaps on punts and field goal attempts. If Rogers does what Rogers does this season, South Carolina football will be one step closer to returning to the elite special teams production they experienced in 2022 and 2021.
