Local 4-star South Carolina basketball target reveals commitment decision
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina basketball coach Dawn Staley had a busy Saturday. The Gamecock head coach was the celebrity guest picker on College GameDay as Shane Beamer's South Carolina football team took on the LSU Tigers, and Staley and her team stuck around to be honored during halftime for their undefeated National Championship-winning season last year.
While Staley was on national television (something that can only help her program), a 4-star Gamecock target announced her college commitment as Columbia native and Heathwood Hall Episcopal School product Lauren Jacobs pledged her services to Coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin and the Ole Miss Rebels.
The commitment comes on the heels of Jacobs taking a visit to Oxford.
A 4-star point guard prospect, Jacobs recently earned an offer from the South Carolina basketball program and put USC on her list of top schools, but in the end, she elected to take her talents to a school outside of her hometown.
As of now, the Gamecocks do not have a commitment in the class of 2025. There are 5 freshmen and sophomores on this year's team, however, and there are 9 players on the South Carolina roster who have multiple years of eligibility remaining. That means that a big class is not necessary during the '25 cycle.
Carolina is still in the game on several big-time prospects in the 2025 class, though, and fans can expect Coach Staley to find the right pieces for her team like she always does. Multiple 5-star and 4-star recruits remain options for USC.
The 2024-2025 Gamecocks will start their season with a November 4th neutral site matchup against the Michigan Wolverines in Las Vegas, Nevada. Staley and her team also will play a charity exhibition in Memphis, Tennessee (in the Memphis Grizzlies' FedEx Forum) against the Memphis Tigers on October 15th as part of the Hoops for St. Jude Tip-Off Classic.
