In WNBA battle between South Carolina basketball greats, two Gamecocks log double-doubles
By Kevin Miller
Sunday was a big day for young, talented players in the WNBA. One of the biggest games of the day saw the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky face off. The two teams aren't near the top of the standings but are loaded with the stars of tomorrow. Included among the young talent in the game was a pair of South Carolina basketball legends.
Matching up in the post in Indianapolis was former Gamecock teammates Aliyah Boston and Kamilla Cardoso. The duo played together for two seasons in garnet and black and dominated the paint en route to the 2021-2022 National Championship and the 2022-2023 Final Four. Boston was the 1st overall pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft, while Cardoso was the 3rd selection in the 2024 WNBA Draft.
Both the Fever and the Sky entered the contest with just 4 wins (Indiana was 4-10, and Chicago was 4-8), so the two midwestern squads were desperate for a win.
For the game, Kamilla Cardoso put up her first career double-double in the WNBA. With 10 points and 10 rebounds, she was a force in the paint. She also added a blocked shot.
Boston, though, got the upper hand. In addition to her team pulling off the 91-83 victory, Boston had an exceptional performance, scoring 19 points, pulling down 14 rebounds, dishing out 4 assists, and blocking 5 shots. The 14 rebounds tied her career-high, and the 5 blocks set a new one. Amazingly, she accomplished all of this without committing a single foul.
It was the first professional meeting between the two former South Carolina basketball All-Americans because Cardoso was out with an injury when the two teams met earlier this season. Another Gamecock, forward Victaria Saxton, is on the Indiana Fever roster but did not play in this game.
