Former South Carolina football receiver finds new home in transfer portal just days before game
By Kevin Miller
After losing Xavier Legette and several other wide receivers this offseason, South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer and his coaching staff brought in five wide receivers from the transfer portal to bolster the room for new wide receivers coach Mike Furrey. Jared Brown (Coastal Carolina Chanticleers), Ahmari Huggins-Bruce (Louisville Cardinals), Gage Larvadain (Miami (OH) RedHawks), Vandrevius Jacobs (Florida State Seminoles), and Dalevon Campbell (Nevada Wolfpack) all joined the team with expectations to join the receiver rotation.
However, last week, one of those receivers abruptly left his South Carolina Gamecocks teammates. Ahmari Huggins-Bruce, after failing to secure a spot in the two-deep, left the program. He quickly worked toward enrolling at the University of Louisville again, and on Tuesday, after just months with the Gamecocks and mere days away from week 1 games, Huggins-Bruce is back on the Louisville Cardinals roster.
According to a release from the school, Huggins-Bruce joined the Cardinals on the practice field for the first time on Tuesday. It is unclear at this point if Huggins-Bruce is a walk-on or is on scholarship, but as a college graduate, he should be eligible to play for Louisville if Jeff Brohm and the Cardinals coaching staff allow him to be so.
The loss of Huggins-Bruce doesn't change much for the Gamecocks' plans at wideout. When the Gamecocks released their official depth chart on Monday, Vandrevius Jacobs was named a starter, so was Jared Brown, and a fierce position battle between Gage Larvadain, Mazeo Bennett, Luke Doty, and Payton Mangrum is still ongoing. Those six wideouts, plus Nyck Harbor, Tyshawn Russell, and Dalevon Campbell will handle the majority of the snaps at the position, at least in the early portions of the season.
The Gamecocks will take on the Old Dominion Monarchs at Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday afternoon at 4:15 PM ET. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network and streamed on the ESPN app.
