Former South Carolina basketball star to play in new pro league after WNBA season
By Kevin Miller
WNBA All-Stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier founded Unrivaled Basketball, a 3-on-3 league that will play in the winter, offering additional exposure and earning opportunities for women's basketball players. One of the biggest names to sign with Unrivaled is South Carolina basketball alum Allisha Gray.
Gray will be 1 of 30 players in the league (she was the 15th to make things official) as six teams of five players will compete over the course of 8 weeks. A round-robin schedule will see each team face off with the others with the top-4 teams in the standings advancing to a traditional two-round playoff.
Games in Unrivaled will be quick. Consisting of four quarters like WNBA games, there will be a 1-hour broadcast window per contest. When the Unrivaled 3-on-3 season is over, there will be a 1-on-1 tournament, as well.
Joining Gray with Unrivaled are some of the other top women's basketball players in the world. Famous names like Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier, Satou Sabally, Angel Reese, and Kelsey Plum are among the stars already signed up to play when the season begins in January.
For now, though, Allisha Gray has some unfinished business in the WNBA. The former South Carolina basketball star is trying to push her Atlanta Dream team into the postseason. Right now, Atlanta is one game out of the final playoff spot.
The two-time WNBA All-Star is averaging the second-highest scoring output of her career with 15.7 points per contest. Gray also was the individual champion in the last winter pro league she played in as she was the top performer in the Athletes Unlimited season earlier in 2024, so fans can expect her to put up a good showing with Unrivaled.
