A'ja Wilson's Top-5 Moments with South Carolina Basketball:
No. 1: Winning the 2016-2017 National Championship
A'ja Wilson's list of individual accolades is seemingly never-ending, but her greatest team accomplishment is the crowning achievement of her South Carolina basketball career.
As all fans in Columbia know, the 2016-2017 Gamecocks won the National Championship. It was the culmination of a long build by head coach Dawn Staley from which the Gamecocks rose up from a 10-win season in Staley's first season to a team that has lost just 10 total conference games since their first championship.
Wilson's decision to pick the hometown South Carolina Gamecocks in the class of 2014 built upon the foundation Staley built with players like Tiffany Mitchell and Aleighsa Welch and helped bring it to the level it is today. Now, South Carolina basketball is the premier program in the country as they overthrew the UConn Huskies' dynasty, defeated other legendary coaches like Kim Mulkey and Tara VanDerveer, and beat the top scorer in the sports' history (Caitlin Clark) to secure an undefeated season.
Even with three titles during the Dawn Staley era, there is something special about the first one, and A'ja Wilson was the catalyst to that championship.
