The South Carolina Gamecocks Athletics Department has been led by (former South Carolina baseball coach) Ray Tanner since 2012. It wasn't long after that when Chance Miller joined the staff at the University of South Carolina, and by 2019, he was Tanner's right-hand man and held a lot of responsibilities at the school.
That year, Miller officially was named the Senior Deputy Athletics Director. Miller has been a vital part of Ray Tanner's office since that time, but on Thursday night, there was an announcement that signaled an end to Miller's time with the school after over ten years and about five years in his position.
After weeks of rumors, official word came down from the Athletics Department for the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers that Chance Miller was being hired as the next AD in Conway. Technically, his new title is Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics and University Recreation. He replaces the two-person team of Matt Hogue and (former Coastal Carolina football coach) Joe Moglia as the head of the Coastal Carolina University Athletics Department.
Miller will oversee an athletic department at Coastal that has 19 varsity sports, a similar number to the 21 at the University of South Carolina.
Ray Tanner remains the AD in Columbia, but at 66 years old, it remains to be seen how much longer the legendary baseball coach plans to work at the University of South Carolina as AD. For many, Miller had seemed like a natural heir to Tanner's position upon his retirement, but with the move to Coastal, the future of the athletic department is fuzzier. Tanner's contract runs through 2026.
During Miller and Tanner's time together at the top of Gamecock Athletics, some major behind-the-scenes improvements have been made at USC, and the duo ended their time together with a big swing of a hire for South Carolina baseball, bringing in the legendary Paul Mainieri and helping secure a strong staff of assistant coaches.
