A'ja Wilson breaks another all-time WNBA record, leads Aces to win 8th game in a row
By Kevin Miller
A'ja Wilson is in the midst of the greatest individual season in WNBA history. The South Carolina basketball alum already set a new single-season record for scoring (and then became the league's first 1000-point scorer), and she is on pace to finish with better points per game and PER (Player Efficiency Rating) numbers than any star ever to play in the W.
On Tuesday night, Wilson made more history as she became the most prolific single-season rebounder in the WNBA during an 85-72 win over the Seattle Storm on the road. The record had been broken earlier this season by rookie Angel Reese, but with Reese missing the final few games with a wrist injury, Wilson overtook the young forward to etch her name in the record books for what feels like the thousandth time of her career.
In what became a cruise control effort against the Storm, Wilson finished the game with 21 points on 50% shooting and pulled down 7 rebounds. The contest marked the 35th time in 38 games in which she has scored at least 20 points and the 35th time in 38 games in which she has secured at least 7 rebounds.
The Las Vegas Aces have just one more game on the regular season schedule (a Thursday matchup with the Dallas Wings in Vegas), and then the WNBA Postseason begins on Sunday, September 22nd. Wilson and the Aces are going for just the second-ever 3-peat, and if they pull off another championship, they would join the Houston Comets in achieving the dynastic streak.
As far as individual accolades go, Wilson likely will be the unanimous MVP and should bring home another Defensive Player of the Year trophy. Winning either honor would be the third time she has claimed the award as she was the MVP in 2020 and 2022 and DPOY in 2022 and 2023.
