As she often does, South Carolina basketball coach Dawn Staley pulled in an elite recruiting class in the 2024 cycle. The Gamecocks finished with the #3-ranked class in America, and all three players in the group were 5-star prospects.
Post player Adhel Tac enrolled early as she rehabbed a knee injury. Guard Maddy McDaniel was a McDonald's All-American. Forward Joyce Edwards won multiple National Player of the Year honors and was the MVP at the McDonald's All-American Game, Jordan Brand Classic, Nike Hoop Summit, and AmeriCup.
The 2025 class does not have any commitment yet, but the Gamecocks are in on some of the very best players in the country. As it turns out, though, they are also involved with some of the top hoopers from outside of the country, as well.
On Wednesday, 5-star wing Agot Makeer from Ontario, Canada announced that she was cutting her list of top schools down to 12, and South Carolina basketball made the cut.
Along with the South Carolina Gamecocks, Makeer included the Vanderbilt Commodores, Louisville Cardinals, Kentucky Wildcats, Virginia Tech Hokies, Michigan Wolverines, Duke Blue Devils, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, UConn Huskies, North Carolina Tar Heels, UCLA Bruins, and Michigan State Spartans. She has not yet visited Columbia.
At 6'1", Makeer is extremely athletic. Her quickness and instincts make her a potentially dynamic and switchable defender at the next level. Her length allows her to swallow up opposing ballhandlers, get her fingertips on almost any pass or shot attempt made near her, and hold her own against bigger post players.
On offense, she has a confident handle that allows her to move the ball as freely as she moves. She can get to the bucket but is not afraid to pull up for a jumper, something she can do with success. She will provide a "position-less" canvas for a college coach to paint with as she can be a secondary ballhandler and playmaker, a traditional 3-and-D wing, or a small-ball post player.
In all, Agot Makeer has the makings of becoming a star at the college level if things go well for her, and for now, South Carolina basketball is on her radar.
