5-star South Carolina basketball recruiting target transferring to powerhouse closer to Columbia
By Kevin Miller
Makeer is one of the most sought-after players in the country in the 2025 recruiting cycle, so Gamecock head coach Dawn Staley has some stiff competition in trying to land her commitment. In June and July, Makeer trimmed her list of favorite schools twice, but the South Carolina basketball program has stayed in the mix. Currently, USC is one of six finalists vying for her services, along with the Duke Blue Devils, North Carolina Tar Heels, Michigan State Spartans, UConn Huskies, and Kentucky Wildcats.
As a player, Makeer is a special talent. At 6'1" with plus-athleticism and long arms, she can play any spot on the floor other than center, and she is confident with the ball in her hands as a primary engine of an offense.
On the defensive end of the floor, Makeer can guard nearly anyone she matched up against, something that greatly intrigues a defensive-minded coach like Dawn Staley. She can swallow up smaller defenders with her size, while still being capable of sticking with them thanks to her athleticism and instincts. Her length provides her with some shot-blocking and rebounding juice, too.
On offense, the Canada native can score in a variety of ways. She is a dangerous driver who can slither her way to the cup and finish against most defenders, but she also has a comfortable jump shot that she can take in catch-and-shoot situations or off-the-dribble.
