South Carolina junior safety Nick Emmanwori has addressed the controversy surrounding his early exit from the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl and announced his decision to declare for the 2025 NFL Draft.
During the Citrus Bowl on December 31, 2024, Emmanwori did not participate in the second half. He was seen on the sidelines in uniform but without his helmet, prompting speculation about his sudden absence. Head coach Shane Beamer referred to the situation as an “internal team matter” and declined to provide further details at the time.
On January 2, 2025, Emmanwori took to social media to clarify the situation, stating that his absence was due to “miscommunication” between himself and the coaching staff. He expressed regret over the incident, emphasizing that he never intended to abandon his teammates. Emmanwori wrote, “As for the bowl, it was just some miscommunication between me and some coaches. We weren’t on the same page I’ll take some accountability for that. never intended for it to end like that and I never quit on my teammates.”
In the same announcement, Emmanwori declared his intention to enter the NFL Draft, foregoing his final year of eligibility. He reflected on his three-year tenure with the Gamecocks, expressing gratitude for the experiences and support from fans. “Thank you South Carolina, these past 3 years a bunch of history and memories were made,” he wrote. “I swear I wouldn’t trade it for anything, the journey was amazing.”
Emmanwori’s decision to sit out the second half of the bowl game drew criticism from some fans and commentators, with discussions about player commitment and team dynamics surfacing online.
Throughout the 2024 season, Emmanwori was a standout performer for South Carolina, recording 54 tackles, four interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns. His collegiate career totals include 163 solo tackles and six interceptions.
