During Monday evening's WNBA Draft, several former college stars saw their professional basketball dreams come true. For Kenyan-born Madina Okot, the Atlanta Dream selected the former South Carolina center in the first round.
With the No. 13 overall pick, the Dream selected Okot, who at 6-foot-6 will join the likes of Rhyne Howard, Allisha Gray and newly-acquired free agent Angel Reese. Here's a look at Okot's contact details, using the 2026 rookie wage scale, via Sporttrac.
Okot reportedly signed a four-year deal with the Dream. Per Sporttrac, her contract will total $1,294,367. Per the terms of the WNBA's scale, the center will make $289,133 in her first season, $300,698 in her second, $330,768 in her third and make up to $373,768 in her fourth season. It's the same rookie wage scale that her former teammate, Raven Johnson, will make with the Indiana Fever.
“I couldn’t be more excited (about Okot),” Dream head coach Karl Smesko said of his team's selection. “We were really hopeful and maybe a bit pessimistic that she would be available. Her ability to crash the boards and the way she moves defensively, I think she’ll be a good addition.”
In March, ESPN reported that lottery draft picks will be eligible to receive full salary protection during their rookie seasons, with additional salary protection options available for other picks. In previous WNBA CBAs, draft picks only earned these protections if teams exercised their fourth-year option.
Okot's salary does not include other forms of income, including endorsement deals and sponsorships, which are sure to come her way in the league.
For a player that started her career playing college basketball in Kenya, seeing Okot secure a bag in the first round of the WNBA Draft is awesome to see.
