You can't win all the battles when it comes to college football recruiting. Over the weekend, the South Carolina Gamecocks coaching staff lost a big-time target to another program inside the SEC.

On Saturday afternoon, 4-star wide receiver Iveon Lewis committed to the Kentucky Wildcats and head coach Mark Stoops. Lewis, who had moved up his commitment date from July 1 to this Saturday, chose the Wildcats over his final schools of Georgia, Virginia Tech, Maryland and the Gamecocks. The news of Lewis' commitment was first reported by Hayes Fawcett of Rivals.

Lewis was predicted to end up at Kentucky, but that doesn't make this sting any less for South Carolina fans. The loss of Lewis takes a big-time prospect off the board for the Gamecocks' 2027 recruiting class. He is rated as the No. 43 overall receiver from the class of 2027, and is the No. 6 ranked prospect out of his home state of Virginia, per the 247Sports Composite. South Carolina was the first SEC program to offer Lewis in October of 2023.

Across two seasons tracked by MaxPreps, Lewis had 71 receptions for 1,736 yards with 24 touchdowns for Huguenot High School in Richmond, Va.

While the Gamecocks do have verbal commits from pass-catchers in the class from three-star tight end Judah Lancaster and three-star wide receiver DJ Huggins. But getting Lewis added to the 40th-ranked class would be a huge get for Beamer and company.

Although the wideout had a visit to Columbia scheduled for June 5, it's unclear if he will keep the remaining official visits on his list now that his commitment is official. He also has a visit to Virginia Tech scheduled for May 29.

With Lewis no longer a target, it's back to the drawing board for South Carolina's 2027 class, which features just six hard verbal commits.
